Fireworks, Cop Chase 5K and Skato With Kato Also This Week
After two years as a virtual event, the Ocean City Flower Show will return to the Music Pier from Friday to Sunday (June 3 to June 5). The 48-year-old tradition presented by the Garden Club of Ocean City features floral creations and displays from enthusiasts of all ages.
Awards are given in a variety of categories for artistic design and horticulture. This year’s theme is “Careers – All That You Can Do.” The event also features a small sales pavilion.
The public is invited to check out the beautiful displays. Show hours are 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free (donations to the Garden Club are optional).
A fireworks display will be launched from the beach at Fifth Street at 9 p.m. Thursday (June 2) to celebrate the 93rd anniversary of Gillian’s amusements on the Ocean City Boardwalk.
The annual Cop Chase 5K is set for Saturday (June 4) and registration is open. The scenic 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race will start at 8 a.m. at Sixth Street and Boardwalk, travel down the Boardwalk and on the streets at the northern end of Ocean City, then finish on the Ocean City High School track. Race-day registration and packet pickup is at the Ocean City High School track with parking accessible from the beach block of Fifth Street.
All proceeds benefit the Ocean City Police Benevolent Association, which supports scholarships for high school seniors, a Christmas toy drive, free bike helmets and other community projects. During and after the race, the OCPBA will host a series of fitness events (non-competitive) for kids ages 5 to 12. There is no charge for the kids events and all children who participate will receive a ribbon and a chance to win a bicycle from the Tuckahoe Bike Shop.
The Skato With Kato skateboarding celebration is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday (June 4) at the Ocean City Skate Park at Fifth Street and Asbury Avenue. The event features a competition, music and fun. It’s named for Kato, a white German shepherd from the Humane Society of Ocean City, the city’s no-kill animal shelter. All proceeds from the event benefit the Humane Society. A concert by LNJ Sessions will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the skate competition starts at 3:30 p.m.
Admission is free (with donations accepted and appreciated). There will be a $20 registration fee for each skater. Kato and his friends from the Humane Society will be on hand.
JUNE 11 — Miss Artisan Scholarship Pageant and Show: 7 p.m. at the Music Pier. This year’s entertainment will be a concert by the Original Hobo Band. Admission is free. JUNE 15 — Farmers Market: The weekly Farmers Market opens for the season on the Tabernacle Grounds at Sixth Street and Asbury Avenue. Hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
JUNE 18 — Health & Fitness Expo: Come explore health food and wellness product vendors, various yoga and fitness classes, western line dance and ballroom dance classes, a book-signing by renowned author and vegan bodybuilder Robert Cheeke. The event will also feature a Kids Corner. Hosted by the Healthy Living Advisory Council. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Music Pier.
JUNE 18 — Compassionate Heart Productions Presents Unity Concert: The concert will feature a multi-cultural cast performing music by African American composers. JUNE 20 — “It Was 50 Years Ago Today: A Tribute To The Beatles”: Summer Concert Series show features Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Jason Scheff, Joey Molland and Denny Laine performing their hits along with music from the Beatles albums “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver.” The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. JUNE 26 — Big Bad Voodoo Daddy with the Ocean City Pops: The Ocean City Pops Orchestra will open its 2022 summer season with a special show featuring the legendary swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Taking inspiration from the creators of this uniquely American art form, the band’s original horn-infused music and legendary high-energy show introduces the genre to a new and younger generation, while remaining respectful of the music’s rich legacy.
