And you may want to remind your friends that this year there will be an extra special feature to First Day at the Beach. You may recall reading about a BOTTLE that recently washed ashore on the Outer Banks in North Carolina. It so happens that this particular bottle was one of about 30 that were placed in the Ocean as part of a message in a bottle contest held in July1985.

The fact that this bottle surfaced after 24 years in the ocean aroused the interest of the media and the story generated national publicity for the resort. On January 1, the good folks involved in this bottle caper will return to Ocean City and be recognized at 1:30 p.m. in front of the Music Pier. They include Heidi Kay Werstler, (now Mozzo), who was six years old back in 1985. With the help of her father, Heidi sealed the message in a plastic soda bottle. She will be accompanied by her husband, Anthony and her two year old daughter, Emily.

Visiting from Duck, North Carolina, site of the historic bottle rescue, will be Mel Hammock, who scooped the bottle from the water and Beth Pennington, an executive of the Sanderling Resort in Duck who reported the find to the Ocean City Public Relations Office. All three will receive a coveted Ocean City Piece of the Walk and baskets of Ocean City Salt Water Taffy and other resort products.

FIRST DAY IN THE DOWNTOWN: Stores on the Asbury Avenue shopping district will be open on Jan. 1 during the day featuring an array of bargains.

BEACH TAGS at pre-season prices will be on sale on Thurs., New Year's Eve from noon till 4 p.m. and New Year's Day from 10 to 4 p.m. at the office in front of the Music Pier, weather permitting
