July 16, 2011: NIGHT IN VENICE is early this year: July 16, less than two weeks away. It’s time to register

your boat or home for the annual competition. The Boat Parade begins 6:30 p.m. by the Longport Bridge and ends at Tennessee Ave.


Optional theme this year is Broadway on the Bay. Entry is free. There will be cash prizes for all who enter boats plus trophies for boat winners and best decorated homes. Boat participants will receive $50 cash cards to enhance decorations providing they finish the Parade. Plus boat captains will be given a special gift and all boat owners will receive a free photo of their boat. All boat and home entrants will be given a decorative mug featuring the Broadway theme.

Grand marshal of the Parade will be Ian Laperriere , Philadelphia Flyers popular forward. Ian recently received the NHL’s Masterton Trophy for his dedication to hockey following a likely career ending injury.

Grandstand seating will be available free at street ends along the Parade route. Arrive early. The Boat Parade may also be viewed at the Bayside Center 5th and Bay Ave. Tickets for this location are $7 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Gates open at 4 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at City Hall Annex or the Music Pier Box Office, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, open seven days a week from 9.am. till 4:30 p.m.

There is limited street parking in the Bayside area. Free parking and a free shuttle service will be available from the Ocean City Airport, 25th and Bay Ave. and the soccer field at Bay and Tennessee Ave. to the Bayside Center and Street viewing locations from 4 p.m. till midnight. Shuttles will also pick up persons parked at the Aquatic and Fitness Center- Library Complex at 17th Simpson Ave.

The Good Tymes Band will start playing 4:45 p.m. at Bayside. There will be children’s activities including games, crafts and face painting. Snacks will be sold by the Sting Rays Swim Team to benefit their Special Olympics program. Visitors may bring their own picnic baskets and chairs. No alcohol is permitted. Grand stands will be set up at the Bayside Center for boat viewing.

July 15: Night in Venice is preceded by the popular MERCHANTS IN VENICE Seafood Festival, Fri., July 15 from 5 to 9 p.m. from 6th to 9th Streets on Asbury Ave. A wide variety of tasty seafood will be offered and there will be rides for the children.

July 6-7: The Ocean City Opera Company presents LES MISERABLES at the Music Pier featuring local talent, ages 8 to 18. Call 609-576-2060 for information. Performances start 7:30 p.m.

July 7: The Recreation Department’s annual FRECKLE CONTEST will be held at the Music Pier starting 6:30 p.m. Registration begins at 6 p.m. for this contest for folks showing off real and painted on freckles. Call 609-525-9300 for information.

July 7: Annual Sindia MINIATURE GOLF Day, hosted by the Ocean City Historical Museum, 17th and Simpson Ave. Location will be Playland’s Seaport Village between 9th and 10th Streets on Boardwalk, July 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sponsored by Playland and the Ocean City Exchange Club. The event honors William and Nancy Hughes who will receive the “Star of the Show Award” for their contributions to the arts.
