What's Happening in Ocean City

The City's most colorful events, the annual Street Rod Show , is set for this weekend, Friday through Sunday (Sept. 10-12). Street Rod owners from throughout the East Coast will display over 200 of their enhanced vehicles for the 36th time here. A Street Rod is any car manufactured prior to1964 that has been modified with more modern parts. Owners are creative and in addition to adding exterior and interior modifications often paint unusual designs on the bodies of the vehicles.

Cars will be parked at the Sports and Civic Center, 6th St. off Boardwalk, from noon Sept. 10 until 2 p.m. Sept. 12. There will be a Boardwalk display of the cars, Sat., Sept.11 from noon until 4 p.m. An awards ceremony is set for Sunday at noon inside the Sports and Civic Center.

Street Rod events also include a fashion show Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m. inside the Music Pier Auditorium, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, featuring clothing from Gabrielle's of Ocean City. Admission is free. The event is open to all.

The Fabulous Grease Band will also entertain the Rodders and general public at the Pier auditorium 8 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 11. The Grease Band plays the hits from the 50s through the 90s. The City, American Legion Morvay-Miley Post 524 and VFW Post 6650 will hold A Day To Remember , the annual September 11 Commemoration ceremony on Saturday. The program is set from 11 a.m. at Veteran's Memorial Park, 500 Wesley Ave. Rain location is across the Street at the Tabernacle Auditorium. As part of the ceremony, American Legion Post Commander, Bob Marzulli and VFW Commander, Brendan Gheen, will unveil emblems from both of their organizations featured in the new brick walkway of the Park. The ceremony honors the memory of all those who perished on Sept.11. It is also a tribute to the fire and other personnel who participated in rescue and recovery operations.

The Humane Socity of Ocean City presents its Funday at Playland on the Boardwalk from 1 to 5 p.m. September 11. Enjoy all rides for $10. Proceeds benefit the shelter, a no kill facility named one of the best for its size in the nation.

The Ocean City Pops features the GAMP Concert Choir with tenor Justin Gonzalez on Sept.12. Talented pianist, Yang Boa, plays Beethoven with the Pops at the Music Pier, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15/$10 at the Pier Box Office, 609-525-9300 or visit www.ocnj.us. The Pops is back at the Music Pier, 7:30 p.m., Sept.15 with its popular Night In Old Vienna featuring Stauss waltzes, polkas and marches. Tickets are $15 at the Pier Box Office or online. Sponsored by Mack and Manco in memory of the Frank Ruggieri who was a conductor of the Pops and part of the orchestra for over 60 years.

The Boardwalk Family Fun Fest will be held Sept. 18-19 featuring a juried craft show, Face Painters, Pony rides at 11th St. Fest hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Ocean City Pops presents Chris Brubeck's Triple Play with the Pops at the Hughes Performing Arts Center, 6th and Atlantic Ave.7:30 p.m., Sept. 19 featuring music ranging from jazz to folk, from Blues to classics. News Notes: There will be a Red Cross Blood Drive on Fri., Sept. 17 from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m. at the Sports and Civic Center 6th and Boardwalk. Appointments are preferred but not required, call 609-525-9365, 609-399-6111 or you can sign up at the City Hall Reception Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mon.-Fri. Again this year the Morvay-Miley Post 524 of the American Legion will preside over a POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony on Fri., Sept.17 at 1p.m. The event takes place at Ocean View Service Area on the Garden State Parkway, Mile Post 18.3 in front of the Veterans Memorial. The public is invited to this solemn occasion that honors the commitments and sacrifices of our nation's prisoners of war and missing in action.

The Ocean City Life Saving Station 30 will host a meeting at the Ocean City Public Library, 17th and Simpson Ave., to discuss the recent past and future of the 4th Street Life-Saving Station. Date is Wed., Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Room.

The public is invited to offer their input and support Sept. 24: Annual OCPD Police Beach BBQ Fundraiser, 6-9pm, Deauville Inn, Strathmere, $25 per person, tickets available at Ocean City Welcome Center, 16 E. 9th Street, or at the door that evening.

Horsey's Restaurant formerly of 1357-59 Asbury Ave. will hold its reunion on Sept. 11 from noon till 6 p.m. on the 14th St. Beach. Many former guests and employees will be there. David Roehm would like you to know about this.
