What's Happening in Ocean City, NJ 12/13/17

All-inclusive First Night admission buttons – good for entry to every venue in Ocean City’s family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration – are on sale now for a discounted $15. On Friday (Dec. 15), the price goes up to $20. Visit firstnightocnj.com to buy them online, call 1-800-BEACH-NJ or stop by Roy Gillian Welcome Center on the Route 52 causeway, Stainton’s (810 Asbury Avenue) or the City Hall Welcome Center at Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue.

Now in its 26th year, First Night includes a spectacular lineup of more than 60 shows and activities at venues throughout Ocean City during the alcohol-free celebration from 4 p.m. to midnight on Dec. 31, 2017.

Popular attractions such as rides on Wonderland Pier, outdoor ice-skating, Abbott and Costello impersonators, the Fabulous Greaseband, nationally acclaimed magicians Chad Juros and Ben Lipman, and Japanese drummers return this year. The USO Troupe and Chubby Checker will provide headline entertainment on the Ocean City Music Pier. The pool at the Ocean City Aquatics and Fitness Center and the new skateboard park at Fifth Street and Asbury Avenue will both be open to button-holders.

A fireworks display over the beach and boardwalk caps off  the festivities and rings in the new year at midnight. A printable version of the full schedule of activities and venues is available at firstnightocnj.com. Jitneys will provide free transportation between all venues from 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Ocean City’s New Year’s celebration continues on Jan. 1 with First Day on the Beach and the First Day Shopping Extravaganza. The beach events include the annual 5-kilometer boardwalk run at 1 p.m. and the “First Dip” in the Atlantic Ocean at 2 p.m. Because of boardwalk reconstruction, the run will start on the boardwalk and include some streets at the north end. Online registration is open at https://runsignup.com/Race/NJ/OceanCity/FirstDay5KBoardwalkRun. The Shopping Extravaganza includes great bargains on downtown shopping and free horse-and-carriage rides, noon to 3 p.m., starting at City Hall.

The Hooters, who played to a sold-out Music Pier in their Ocean City debut last July, will return this summer for two concerts on June 19 and June 20. The band burst onto the Philadelphia and Jersey Shore music scene in 1980 with hits like “And We Danced” and “All You Zombies.” Their songwriting led to fellow artists’ hits like “Time After Time” (Cyndi Lauper) and “One Of Us” (Joan Osborne). Tickets, $59 and $75, go on sale Dec. 14 with a pre-sale (use code BRE) opening at 10 a.m. Dec. 13.

Tickets ($39 and $45) also are on sale for an Aimee Mann concert on June 18 at the Music Pier. An acclaimed songwriter in her fourth decade of performing, Mann performs in Ocean City for the first time.

Bob Rose and BRE Entertainment have announced two other events in the 2018 Summer Concert Series at the Ocean City Music Pier. Tickets are on sale now for America on July 16 ($76/$65) and for the Led Zeppelin tribute band Get the Led Out on June 25 and 26 ($45/$39.50).

Visit www.ticketmaster.com or call 866-448-7849 for any of the shows.

The Ocean City Theatre Company puts a musical spin on a timeless story by Charles Dickens with three more performances of “A Christmas Carol – The Broadway Musical” on Friday and Saturday.

The production features a professional cast of performers under the direction of Shannon Agnew with choreography by Colleen Kreisel and music direction by John Grieco. Broadway’s Alan Menken (Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” “Little Shop of Horrors”) and Lynn Ahrens (“Ragtime,” “Seussical,” “Once on This Island”) breathe new life into the classic tale with their adaptation.

The musical remains true to the story with three ghosts leading the selfish Ebenezer Scrooge through his past, present and future. Scrooge ultimately greets Christmas morning with a cheerful “Happy Christmas” before spending the day reconnecting and sharing love with those that mean the most to him.

Performances will be at the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace) at the following times:

·         Dec. 15 and 16: 7:30 p.m.

·         Dec. 16: 2 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $15 for kids. Advance reservation is encouraged. Call 609-399-6111 or visit oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice.
