Ocean City Flower Show and Fireworks on Thursday Highlight Week’s Events

Ocean City’s Night in Venice celebration will be “Rockin’ Through the Decades” this year on July 22, and entries are currently being accepted from all those who want to participate in the 63rd annual bayfront celebration.

The boat parade and decorated bayfront home contest provides a chance to be part of the highlight of the summer season in Ocean City. Thousands of spectators line the bayfront, and thousands more attend private parties at homes along the route from the Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue.

The optional theme will be "Rockin' Through the Decades," a celebration of music, fashion and culture on the rolling waters of the bay. Entries for boats and homes are currently being accepted online at www.ocnj.us/niv or by calling 609-399-6111.

Alfonso Ribeiro will be grand marshal. Ribeiro is the new host of “America’s Funniest Home Videos ” and created the memorable character of Carlton Banks opposite Will Smith in “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” A limited number of tickets ($15) are on sale now for a meet-and-greet with Ribeiro from 11 a.m. to noon July 22 on the Ocean City Music Pier.

Night in Venice also will celebrate its “Rockin’ Through the Decades” theme this year with concerts by O-Town with Ryan Cabrera and Gloria Gaynor with the Ocean City Pops orchestra.

O-Town and Cabrera will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, July 21 on the Ocean City Music Pier. The Night in Venice boat parade is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, July 22. Gaynor joins the Pops at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 23 on the Music Pier to round out the Decades Weekend.

Ocean City is proud to welcome ACME as a presenting sponsor for Night in Venice 2017. The state Division of Travel and Tourism also provides grant funding. A fireworks display will return this year to cap off the celebration.


All are invited to celebrate Wonder Bear’s Birthday at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier (the 87th anniversary of Gillian’s amusements on the boardwalk) from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1. All rides will be only two tickets and a free fireworks show will go off at 9 p.m. from the beach adjacent to Wonderland. 

The 45th annual Ocean City Flower Show runs Friday through Sunday on Ocean City Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and Boardwalk. The show features beautiful commercial and amateur displays with prizes awarded in many different divisions. Show times are 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free (with donations to the sponsoring Garden Club of Ocean City optional). BRITISH MUSIC INVASION (June 4): The Cape Shore Chorale will perform music from the British Isles, including madrigals, Gilbert & Sullivan, and contemporary English pieces. Concert is 3 p.m. Sunday, June 4 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 2998 Bay Avenue in Ocean City. Free will offering. Refreshments will be available. SHOW US YOUR PAWS PARADE (June 10): Many of the contests from the Woofin’ Paws Pet Fashion Show move to an Ocean City Boardwalk Parade this year. Costumed dogs and other pets compete in categories such as “Best Super Hero Dog,” “Most Patriotic,” “Best Surfer Dog/Bathing Beauty,” “Pet/Owner Look-Alike,” “Best Dressed Dog,” “Best Decorated Wagon” and “Best Dressed Pet.” Contestants show off their stuff in a parade that starts at 4:45 p.m. and goes from Sixth Street to 14th Street. DAVE MASON (June 19): Special guests Marti Jones & Don Dixon join Rock Hall of Famer Dave Mason for a concert at 7 p.m. on the Ocean City Music Pier. Mason will perform his album “Alone Together” in full – featuring such hits as “Only You And I Know” and “Look At You Look At Me.” He also will deliver hits from throughout his solo career (“We Just Disagree”), his time with Traffic (“Feelin’ Alright”) and more. 4th ANNUAL OC’S GOT TALENT SHOW (June 24): Talented people with backgrounds in vocal, dance, instrumental, drama, comedy, and more will compete for prizes in front of a special guest panel of judges. VANESSA WILLIAMS WITH THE OCEAN CITY POPS (June 25): One of the most respected performers in the entertainment industry, Williams has hit songs that include, “Save the Best For Last,” “Dreamin’ ” and “Colors of the Wind” from Disney’s “Pocahontas.” She’ll be backed by the Ocean City Pops in the season opener for the renowned orchestra. FARMERS MARKET (June 28): Ocean City’s popular weekly Farmers Market opens for the season 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 28. It returns every Wednesday through Sept. 6 on the grounds of the Ocean City Tabernacle on the 500 block of Asbury Avenue. Crafters in the street on Asbury.

WACKY WEDNESDAY (June 28): Use your creativity to shape and sculpt salt water taffy into your very own unique masterpiece. Contest is free. Open to all ages.
