OCEAN CITY, N.J.: How does Ocean City greet the coming of the fall season? By plopping, what else?

For the past five years this family resort has held the KING & QUEEN of PLOP Contest.

Participants demonstrate dramatic plops on the sand to illustrate their enthusiasm for the fall, a beautiful time in Ocean City with many special events.

On Fri., Aug. 30, a group of “right proper ploppers” will vie for the title of the King and Queen of Plop or Mr. Fall Guy or Miss Fall Gal. After the winner is announced contestants hold hands and perform a “mass plopping” as a goodwill, no sore loser gesture.

Contestants may register starting 10:30 a.m. at 9th St. Beach. Contest starts at 11 a.m. Entry is free and prizes are awarded. Anyone who would like to make a name for him or herself in the discipline of plopping is invited to enter.

“This is a unique contest. No other community in the world offers such a creative opportunity. We really push the envelope when it comes to plopping,” said Trash Buster, the City’s Environmental Super Hero, who will emcee the event.

Some special guests include Doug Jewell, “the plopping pirate,” Suzanne Muldowney, AKA Shelley the Mermaid, who will sink to the sands after performing an interpretive dance, the World’s Only Wind Chimes Band, that will tinkle Jingle Bells and their chart topper, “Brother Can You Spare a Chime,” the Ocean City Fish, who will dance to the Twist, “Come On Every Body, Let’s Do the Plop!”

Also featured will be Jerry Lukas, the plopping cartoonist, who will draw cartoons while lying on the sand, Martin Z. Mollusk, Ocean City’s weather predicting Hermit Crab and Ken Thorpe, who will make paper airplanes that will soar into the air before nose diving to the beach.
