What's Happening in Ocean City, NJ 4/7/16

Residents and visitors will be treated to three special events in the next two weekends. The OC-CON Comic Book and Memorabilia Show and GIRLS WEEKEND are both set for April 9-10. The DOO DAH PARADE will be held on April 16 with the Basset Hound Olympics on April 15.

The OC-Con event at the Ocean City Music Pier will give the public a rare insight into the colorful world of comics.  Visitors will be able to meet with noted comic book illustrators including Ron Wilson at discussion sessions during the weekend.  There will be comic creators from Disney Films, Marvel Comics, Archie Comics, DC Comics and many more.  Members of the 501st Legion of “Star Wars” fame will be in attendance both days.  On Sunday, the public will be able to participate in or observe a Cosplay (costume contest) at 2 p.m. on the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, where the show will be held. The fun begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. with a “Super Hero Run” followed by a “Super Hero Obstacle Dash” at noon. Register for the race events at www.ocnj.us/Race-Events.                                                                                                               

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children 12 and under. Two day admission is $8 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.

GIRLS WEEKEND: This new event comes from the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Merchants Association. The ladies will be offered an array of specialties on Asbury Avenue, including dining specials, shopping discounts, table sales, fashion show, yoga, wellness classes, craft projects, demonstrations and more.

There will be a kick-off Fashion Show 7 p.m. Friday night at Glazed Over Studio, 704 Asbury Ave.  It will include light fare and refreshments, $20 per person. The 31st annual Doo Dah Weekend is set for (April 15-16) with the Parade on the 16. Pre-parade events on the 15th include the hilarious Basset Hound Olympics set for the Tabernacle Grounds, 6th and Asbury at 1 p.m. Watch the genial bassets, ears flapping, engage in spirited sprints, hop over hurdles (sort of)  then race to the finish line prior to taking a well-deserved nap.  Admission is free.

From 2-3 p.m., Dr. Joel Goodman presents a show on “The Positive Power of Humor in Taxing Times: Preventing Hardening of the Attitudes” at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th and Simpson Ave. Joel is the director of the HUMOR Project, Inc., Saratoga Springs, New York.  Joel is one of two professional speakers in the world to have presented in all 50 states and on all seven continents. He is the author of eight books and recipient of the International Lifetime of Laughter Achievement Award. His pioneering work has been featured in over 7,000 media in 175 countries.

The Parade on Saturday at noon, begins at 6th and Asbury Ave., turns at 12th St. to the Boardwalk and ends the Music Pier where the PieAsco is held. At this event, folks smoosh each other in the face with shaving cream pies to honor the memory and humor of the late, great Soupy Sales. No registration necessary to smoosh.  Just be there and bring a towel.

Following an awards ceremony and the PieAsco, the bassets will converge on the football practice field off the 6th St. Boardwalk. Visitors are welcome there to get up close and personal with the dogs and their best friends. (April 15) The TICKET SALE for the annual AUTHOR’S HIGH TEA sponsored by the Friends and Volunteers of the Ocean City Free Public Library. The author’s annual HIGH TEA is May 5 at 2 p.m. in the Flanders Hotel. Guest author will be Patricia Chappine “New Jersey Women in World War II.”

Tickets may be purchased on Friday, April 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the atrium of the Library. Cost per ticket is $30. Open seating. Cash or check only.  Make check payable to FVOCFPL.

(April 17) MUSIC OF THE WATER, a free concert by Ocean City Pops musicians, is scheduled for the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th and Simpson Ave., with special guest pianist Scott Breiner at 3 p.m. Enjoy the musical ebb and flow as the musicians perform works inspired by the sea, rivers and lakes. (April 20) BEACH NOURISHMENT & DUNE VEGETATION will be discussed in the next environmental lecture program, 6:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th and Simpson Ave. Crist Robine from the Coastal Research Center of Stockton University will be guest speaker.  Sponsored by the Ocean City Environmental Commission and the Library.  The event is free and is held in the Chris Maloney Lecture Hall, Room 110 of the Library.  For information, call (609) -399-2434 ext. 5222.

(April 30) The Ocean City Board of Realtors in cooperation with the City presents a free seminar: PREPARING FOR SUMMER from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Homeowners, rental property owners and second home owners will learn about protecting and preparing your real estate investment.

Topics include: Fire Safety Tips, Police Safety Tips, Flood, Condo and Rental insurance, Property maintenance and cleaning, Get the most of your A/C Unit, Question and answer session.
