The 55th annual Boardwalk Art Show will be held Friday through Sunday (August 4 to 6) on the boardwalk between Eighth Street and 13th Street. The celebration of the arts will include a newer event - the Art of Surfing Festival - Thursday to Saturday (August 3 to 5) at the Ocean City Music Pier.

The Boardwalk Art Show features oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, photography, prints and drawings on display and for sale. This year, for the first time in the history of the show, handmade jewelry will be featured as well. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

For Ocean City visitors, this is an opportunity to view and purchase great artwork at a reasonable cost.

Awards will be presented as follows:

  • Permanent Collection Award: The Ocean City Arts Center purchases a piece of art for its collection
  • Best of Show: Fine art and photography - $500
  • Best of Jewelry: $500
  • Aubrey W. Dutton Memorial Award for an Ocean City-Themed Watercolor: $200
  • Second Place Overall: $350
  • Third Place Overall: $250
  • Three Honorable Mentions: $100 each.

The Art of Surfing Festival features the display and sale of surf-related art, memorabilia, books and clothing. The event includes live music and meet-the-artist sessions. Admission is free to the show 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday (August 3) and noon to 10 p.m. Friday & Saturday (Aug 4 and 5).

Genevieve Goings and Constantine "DC" Abramson, the stars of Disney Junior's "Choo Choo Soul," will lead the 108th annual Ocean City Baby Parade at 5 p.m. August 10, 2017.

Registration is open to anybody who wants to participate in the parade, which features children ages 10 and under. For an online entry form and more information, visit ocnj.us/babyparade (a problem with the online registration form has been resolved). Participants also can sign up at the Welcome Center on the ground floor of City Hall at Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue. Entry fee is $5 per child, and the registration deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday, August 8.

Before serving as grand marshals in the parade, Choo Choo Soul will perform a show at the Ocean City Music Pier at 10:30 a.m. on the same day. Ticket prices are $20 orchestra and $18 solarium and are on sale now at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice, at 609-399-6111 or in-person at the Music Pier Box Office and city welcome centers.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT (Starting Aug. 1): - Photographers Loralea Kirby and her son, Zachary, present "Thru Our Imagery," a gallery of Ocean City landmarks, seascapes and iconic images at the Ocean City Arts Center August 1 through August 31. A "Meet the Artists" reception, free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, August 11. The photographs will be for sale.

TWINS CONTEST (Aug. 2): Prizes for those who look the most and least alike. Registration is free and begins at 5:30 p.m. Contest begins at 6 p.m. in front of the Music Pier. For more information, call 609-399-6111.

BEST OF RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN WITH THE OCEAN CITY POPS (Aug. 6): Treasured favorites from "Oklahoma," "South Pacific," "The King and I" and "The Sound of Music" come to life as our Broadway singers join the Pops and the Cape Shore Chorale in this concert featuring the timeless words and music of Broadway's greatest songwriting duo. Show starts at 8 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and Boardwalk. GLEN BURTNIK'S SUMMER OF LOVE CONCERT (Aug. 7): Glen Burtnik's The Summer of Love Concert celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love - 1967 - focusing on musical highlights of that year (as well as great songs from 1968 and 1969), which unofficially kicked off with the release of The Beatles' "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band"plus many other seminal rock albums by artists like The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones, Procol Harum, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and more. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier, 825 Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. "MARY POPPINS" (Aug. 8 to 11): The City of Ocean City, Ocean City POPS, and the Ocean City Theatre Company present the "practically perfect" Disney musical. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences for more than 2,500 performances and received nominations for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8, 9 and 11 with a 2 matinee on Aug. 10. All shows take place at the Hughes Performing Arts Center (beach block of Sixth Street). DISNEY JUNIOR'S CHOO-CHOO SOUL "WITH GENEVIEVE!" (Aug. 10): Come see Genevieve Goings and Constantine "DC" Abramson, the stars of Disney Junior's "Choo-Choo Soul" at the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. They began as a hip-hop/soul children's album of music before the brand was acquired by Disney. In the show, Genevieve is a soulful and hip singing train conductor and DC is a beat-boxing, break-dancing engineer who will engage children in sing-alongs, dance routines and has lots of crowd participation. 108th ANNUAL BABY PARADE (Aug. 10): One of the oldest baby parades in the country. Parade begins at 5 p.m. and travels the boardwalk from Sixth Street to 12th Street with floats and bands continuing to 14th Street. For more information, call 609-399-6111.

BOYS AND GIRLS FISHING TOURNAMENT (Aug. 12): Free event for boys and girls 8 to 16 years old. North end beach at Ocean City-Longport Bridge. Registration is 9 to 10 a.m. Tournament is 10 a.m. to noon. Prizes and trophies awarded. Rain date: August 19. Co-sponsored by Ocean City Fishing Club and City of Ocean City. MISS OCEAN CITY PAGEANT (Aug. 12):  The City of Ocean City will host the 49th annual Miss Ocean City Pageant at 7 p.m. Saturday, August 12. The pageant will be held at the Ocean City Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and the Boardwalk. Twelve contestants will compete in interview, talent, evening gown and swimsuit with the hopes to become the next Miss Ocean City. Contestants vying for the 2018 title include Sophia Terry, Brielle Nicole Hammerstein, Pamela Traflet, Shannon Cattie, Grace Webber, Alexa Rosen, Megan Jessica Keenan, Madison Leigh Kennelly, Nora Sheppard Faverzani, Abigail Waid, Emily Aita, Alanna Palombo. All tickets are $15 and are now on sale at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice, at all City Welcome Centers or by calling 609-399-6111.


Starting in July and running through the end of August, Ocean City's boardwalk and downtown will be host to a series of weekly events:

  • Character Nights: 6 p.m. Sundays on the boardwalk (ends Aug. 6). Mascots for Ocean City Boardwalk businesses will sign autographs at the Music Pier. Sponsored by Manco & Manco Pizza, Surf Mall and Jilly's.
  • Funtastic Tuesdays: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on downtown Asbury Avenue. Entertainment, face painters, balloon sculptors and more.
  • Mummers Nights: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays on the boardwalk (starting July 11). String bands strut the boards between Sixth Street and 14th Street. Sponsored by: Shirt Shack, Preps, Ocean Treasures, Henry's Fine Jewelry.
  • Beach Walks: South end location at 59th Street and Central Avenue (entrance to Corson's Inlet State Park) Tuesdays at 9 a.m., Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. North end location at OC/Longport Bridge parking lot Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m, Wednesdays at 9 a.m. Tickets may be purchased on-site.  Adults $1, children 50 cents.
  • Farmers & Crafters Market: Ocean City's popular weekly Farmers Market every Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Ocean City Tabernacle on the 500 block of Asbury Avenue. Crafters set up on the street adjacent to the Farmers Market.
  • Wacky Wednesdays: This year, the traditional "July Jubilee" and "Weird Week" contests will be held weekly on Wednesdays throughout the summer with a different theme each week.The contest is free and open to all ages. Start time is 10:30 a.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace. Sponsored by Shriver's Salt Water Taffy. 
  • Market Days: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays on downtown Asbury Avenue. Entertainment, face painters, balloon sculptors and more.
  • Family Nights: 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays on the boardwalk. Different bands and entertainers set up between Sixth Street and 14th Street. Sponsored by: Shriver's, Playland's Castaway Cove, Johnson's Popcorn, Gillian's Wonderland Pier.
  • Historic Tours:  2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays. Pick-up at 7th Street and Central Avenue.
