Autos on Saturday; Pops Opens; Unusual Contests to Follow

(June 20) An ANTIQUE AUTO Exhibition on the Ocean City Tabernacle Grounds, 6th and Asbury Ave., will showcase over 300 interesting cars. One of the longest running events of its kind in the East, the exhibit has been featured here for over 70 years. This is a fascinating event for all ages. It’s also ideal for “selfies.”  Pose by an ancient Rolls Royce and post your photo on facebook. Just don’t touch vehicles without permission of the owner. (June 20) Our popular, professional soccer team, the Nor’easters, face the hard charging New York Red Bulls in a match to benefit the Community Food Bank of New Jersey’s “Feed the Storm Drive.” Fans donating non-perishable foods will receive $1 off per item, maximum 2 items. (June 21) Legendary folk singer, JUDY COLLINS opens the season for the Ocean City Pops, that have been bringing great music to the City for 87 years. The Grammy Award Winner is known for her renditions of “Both Sides Now,” “Amazing Grace,” “Turn, Turn, Turn” and many others. The concert is sponsored by the Cape Bank Charitable Foundation, 7:30 p.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Tickets are $35 and $25. (June 22) LUCINDA WILLIAMS, three time Grammy winner, kicks off the City’s 2015 Monday Night Concert Series at the Music Pier, 7:30 p.m. Opening the show will be Buick 6. (June 22-26) JULY JUBILEE, a spin-off on our August “Wacky but Not Tacky” Weird Contest Week, is a five day series of contests that you will find no where else in the Universe except Ocean City. A pre-4th of July event, the schedule challenges the creative skills of young and old alike. They are ask to sculpt something meaningful from Salt Water Taffy, French Fries, a 12 Inch Chocolate Chip Cookie ( that’s the way the cookie crumbles) Paper Clips and make a necklace or a bracelet out of beads.

The Wednesday Cookie Contest also includes a Super Hero and Super Villain Dress Up competition. This event was suggested by Suzanne Muldowney, aka Under Dog and Shelley the Mermaid, who will portray the Villainous Cat Woman. Suzanne will appear in suitable Cat Woman garb, be holding a stuffed toy cat and plans to unleash a blood curdling Meowwww! designed to intimidate and thrill spectators. Sculpting Contests are divided into age groups 5 and under, 6-8, 9-12, Teens and Adults. Admission is free, ribbons are awarded to participants in the various age groups.

(June 24) BROADWAY ON THE BOARDWALK: A rousing production by the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company that celebrates Broadway and the 8th Anniversary of our outstanding theatre group. The production stars Carly Hughes currently featured as Velma Kelly in the Broadway production of CHICAGO. Her Broadway credits also include roles in Pippin, Ghost the Musical, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and many others. Tickets are $25 Orchestra and $20 Solarium. City July 4th events begin with two BIKE PARADES both starting at 10 a.m. The South Ocean City Parade registration is 9 a.m. at 40th and Asbury Ave. Parade starts on Central Ave. at 40th St. and goes south on Central ending at the 52nd St. Playground. The Gardens Civic Assn. Parade registration begins 9 a.m. at the Longport Bridge Parking Lot with route through the Gardens. Entrance in both Parades is free.

KITE FESTIVAL Registration is free starting 6 p.m. with 7:30 p.m. Awards for Kite Categories and Age Divisions. There will be an 8 p.m. Yo Yo Demonstration and contest and an 8:30 p.m. HULA HOOP Contest. All events are free and held between the Music Pier and 10th St. on the Beach. Sponsored by Air Circus .
