It appears that the Ocean City Recreation Department will have to find a spot for two Dalmatians in its annual Freckle Contest set for Thursday, July 2 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.

Daytona 11 and Ash, 4, have petitioned to compete in the contest through their best friend Allison Cozzolino, owner of All Creatures Great and Small of Atlantic County. It seems they want to show off their spots.

“There is nothing in the Freckle Contest by-laws that prohibits Dalmatians or any dog for that matter,” notes Kristie Fenton, recreation supervisor. “It will add a new dimension to the event, take it to the next level. But we absolutely draw the line at leopards.”

Daytona will compete with the 9 to 12 year olds and Ash with the 5 and unders. The Freckle contest offers categories from babies to adults. It has always been a very flexible contest making room for both real and painted on freckles. And now spotted canines.

Registration starts at 6 p.m. in front of the Music Pier. The contest kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Entry is free and prizes are awarded. In the event of rain, the contest will be moved into the Pavilion area of the Pier.

“This is just the beginning,” said City Public Relations Director, Mark Soifer. “I predict that when the Dalmatian community gets wind of this we will be deluged with entries. Maybe next year we’ll have 101 Dalmatians in the contest. Wouldn’t that be neat.”
