OCHM to Remember "Old Sailing Days"

The Museum’s Thursday Night Lecture series continues on August 8, 2013 at 7pm in the Stainton Senior Center (a part of the Ocean City Community Center - 1735 Simpson Avenue) with a performance by Matthew Dodd, noted historical musician. This event entitled “Songs and Stories of Old Sailing Days” will delight all ages. Dressed in1800's seamen's clothes, around a set of a ship's forecastle, Matthew takes listeners back to the days when men spent years "before the

mast" on the great square-rigged sailing ships-- the merchantmen, the navy men, the whalers, the fishermen, the pirates and the privateers. Matthew uses true stories and "yarns" plus ballads and sea shanties (the unforgettable work songs of the average sailor) to tell of the daily life, the hardships, the dangers, the superstitions and the extraordinary adventures (at sea and in port) of the men who sailed the world on deep sea ships, and of the women who waited for their return. Matthew sings and plays guitar, mandolin, banjo and concertina. For more information about this event, contact the Museum at 609-399-1801.
