The July Jubilee celebration features a series of free, family-oriented contests leading into the City’s annual Fourth of July celebration. All contests begin 11 a.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.

Events start on Mon., June 22 with saltwater Taffy sculpting. Contestants are asked to sculpt a work of art out of Taffy. Past results have included the Eiffel Tower, a unicorn, a pair of glasses and an adding machine.

On Tues, June 23, French fry sculpting is offered at the same time and location. In the past Elvis has emerged out of the potatoes as well as a canoe and various exotic birds.

A Super Hero Impersonation Contest is also set for Tues., June 23 during the French Fry Sculpting Contest. Participants of all ages are invited to dress up in their favorite Superhero garb and vie for prizes. Ocean City regular, Suzanne Muldowney, will appear as Under Dog to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the TV cartoon super hero.

On Wed., June 24th, TastyKake Pie sculpting is featured. In the past this event has produced the outline of the state of New Jersey, sunflowers and plenty of blobs.

Also on Wed., June 24, the award winning Al Belmont Magic Show, illusions for all ages, is scheduled for the Music Pier at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for children 12 and under and seniors and $15 for adults. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Feed The Children Foundation.

On Thurs., June 25 “That’s the Way The Cookie Crumbles” contest will challenge participants to chew a work of art from a “really big” cookie.

The contests conclude on Fri., June 26 with Extreme Hermit Crab Wrestling, the world’s most non-violent contact sport. Here’s how it works. Two Hermit Crabs are placed on their backs. The first hermit crab to turn over and right itself is declared the winner. All rounds are timed. The crabs with the best times win prizes. The event is sanctioned by NASCRAB, the National Assn. of Sensational Crab Rassling At the Beach. No pre-registration is required for any of the events. Just show up about 20 minutes ahead of starting time.

The sculpting contests include categories for ages five and under, 6 to 8, 9 to 12, teens and adults. Prizes are awarded. Entry is free.
