MOTHERS DAY CONCERT HONORS MEMORY OF ESTHER WEIL

(May 13) MOTHERS DAY has always been a special time in this family community and resort.  Mothers are and always will be the core of the family, the person who brought us into this world and nurtured us through childhood.
No one felt more strongly about this than the late Esther Weil, the dynamic philanthropist who staged so many musical concerts in Ocean City often at her own expense. Esther was Ocean City’s Musical Mother who brought members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and great soloists like pianist Susan Starr to the Music Pier.

What's Happening 5/4/2012

POPULAR SPRING BLOCK PARTY SET FOR MAY 5TH

The City’s mile long SPRING BLOCK PARTY is set for Sat., May 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from 5th to 14th Streets on Asbury Ave. Over 375 crafters will be featured along with plenty of food, entertainment and public service displays. There will be free pony rides for children on the Tabernacle Grounds, 6th and Asbury Ave., from 11 to 4 p.m. Entertainment is scheduled for those same hours. Parking will be free in downtown lots including the Transportation Center, 10th and Haven Ave., in back of McDonalds. There will be a charge for parking in lots by the Boardwalk.

Martin Z. Mollusk Creeps Again OCEAN CITY HERMIT CRAB CREDITS DIET FOR HIS GOOD HEALTH AND LONGEVITY

Martin Z. Mollusk, Ocean City’s relatively famous hermit crab, will creep onto the 9th St. Beach at 11 a.m. on May 3rd for the 37th time.

Why? Good question. If Martin sees his shadow, summer will come one week early to this family resort much to the joy of the business community, Chamber of Commerce and me, the crab’s spiritual advisor and chef.

What's Happening in Ocean City 4/18/12

CONSUL GENERAL OF PHILIPPINES VISITS CITY ON THURSDAY
Consul General Mario De Leon, Jr. of the Philippines will visit Ocean City on Thursday (April 19) at 11 a.m. to confer with Mayor Jay Gillian. They will discuss final plans for Ocean City’s third annual Tribute to the Philippines in July and other cooperative tourism promotions. The Consul General will be accompanied by Consul Zaldy Patron and Ms. Hermie Aczcon, President of the Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia.  The meeting will be held in the mayor’s office.

Chuck McCann is a very talented and funny guy. He will be grand marshal of Ocean City' s Doo Dah Parade on April 14 and star of its annual comedy show April 13. McCann has been featured in just about every entertainment medium.

What's Happening in Ocean City 3/28/12

Producer Bob Rose has just released the names of two more shows for the City’s summer concert series. The current line-up now includes The Bacon Brothers (July 9), Arlo Guthrie and Family (July 16) Get the Led Out, America’s Led Zeppelin (July 23) the Charlie Thomas Drifters (July 30) Little Feat (August 20) and Mitch Ryder (August 27).  Additional shows will be announced at a later date.

The Return of Joey Eulo, Plus Eventful Events - By Mark Soifer

Forty years ago, when I first became Public Relation Director of Ocean City, a young boy, maybe 9 years old, would wander into our office looking for errands to run. We knew only that his name was Joey.

It was obvious that Joey wasn’t well cared for. So Agnes Cox, who worked with me at the time, and I would pay him to go on errands, bought him a winter coat, a new pair of shoes and tried to help as much as we could.

Dick Richards, Ocean City Resident, Named To Rock’n Roll Hall of Fame

Ocean City resident, Dick Richards, will be inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio on Sat. April, 14th. Richards will be honored along with other original members of Bill Haley’s Comets, the talented musicians led by Haley who jump started Rock ‘n Roll, with Rock Around the Clock and Shake, Rattle and Roll.

Soupy Sale's Famous Prank to be Duplicated for Doo Dah

On New Year's Day, Jan.1, 1962, famed comedian Soupy Sales was wrapping up his popular Children's TV show when the program's producer gave him the signal to improvise. In those days, the syndicated program was presented live, there was no videotaping. Nothing was edited or sanitized. What you saw was went over the airways.

EASTER WEEKEND EVENTS SET FOR OCEAN CITY; HUMANE SOCIETY NEWS

Following is a schedule of Easter Weekend Events in Ocean City.

(Sat., April 7) Woofin’ Paws Pet Fashion Show, 11 a.m., Carey Stadium, 6th St. off Boardwalk. Pets compete in various categories including Best Dressed, Best Bonnet, Best Tail Wagger, Best Bathing Suit, Most Patriotic, Pet-owner Look-Alike and Intelligent Pet Tricks. A $5 entry fee benefits the Ocean City Humane Society, a No Kill Shelter. Spectator admission is free but visitors may make a donation to benefit the Society if they so choose. Best of Show wins the Dean Schofield Woofin’ Paws Plaque for Perfection, named after the late Dean Schofield who was a volunteer member of the Ocean City Public Relations Staff for many years. Canine Celebrity and Best Friend to be Honored at Doo Dah Parade

Elwood, the winner of the 2007 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, has become a media sensation throughout the world. Guided by Karen Quigley of Sewell, the Chinese crested Chihuahua mix has made appearances at hundreds of gatherings projecting a simple message: “You don’t have to be beautiful to be loveable.”

Basset Hounds Love Doo Dah; Valentine Shows Set For This Weekend

For the 11th consecutive year The Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue League will hold its Boardwalk Waddle as part of the Doo Dah Parade set for Sat., April 14. This is one of the largest aggregations of the floppy eared canines in the United States. Over 600 navigate the downtown and Boardwalk, many in costume. It is a pawesome spectacle!

       DOO DAH GRAND MARSHAL NAMED; VALENTINE PROGRAMS SET
 
The Grand Marshal of the Ocean City Doo Dah Parade on April 14 will be Chuck McCann, who has conquered every medium in the entertainment industry, starring in film, television, recordings, stage and as a man of many voices in the world of animation and commercials.
McCann, 77, is still active today. He will appear in a comedy show during Doo Dah Weekend honoring the late Soupy Sales, who attended many Doo Dah events in Ocean City. He and Soupy were good friends.

Night in Venice Theme Announced; Travel Channel Commends City

"Do You Remember When?" will be the optional theme for NIGHT IN VENICE 2012. The nostalgic theme will give boaters and homeowners plenty of flexibility. For instance, decorations could recall your favorite song, past eras like the '50s, the '60s, even the '20s if you want to go back to the Flapper days, your favorite movie of all time, Ocean City memories, etc.

Members of the Community will gather on Saturday to honor the memory and deeds of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The annual tribute is set for 1 p.m., Sat., Jan. 14 at the William and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center, Ocean City High School, 6th and Atlantic Ave.
