Rock 'N Roll Hall of Famer Named Boat Parade Grand Marshal

Ocean City resident, Dick Richards, a recent inductee into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, will be grand marshal of Ocean City’s 58th annual Night In Venice, Sat., July 28.

Richards was the original drummer of Bill Haley’s legendary Comets. He recorded Rock Around the Clock and Shake Rattle and Roll with Haley two songs that made Rock ‘n Roll history.

Now in his eighties, Richards still performs with today’s version of the Comets. Regulars at Branson, Missouri, the group tours Europe every year where they are immensely popular.

This year’s regatta will be extra special. It will be the first time the gala has been held since the new causeway has been completed. This means a smoother evening as there will be no boat delays on the return voyage because of bridge openings and traffic will be uninterrupted over the causeway.

Ocean City Flower Show Celebrates 40th Annisversary

The Ocean City FLOWER SHOW is a testament to volunteerism in Ocean City. The popular event was initiated 40 years ago in 1972 through the efforts of the late, legendary businessman, James F. Penland. He convinced then Mayor B. Thomas Waldman that a Flower Show would be good for the City. Waldman agreed and provided City resources to make the event possible. But the show could never have been held without the assistance and expertise of the Garden Club of Ocean City. Penland realized this and solicited the help of the group who have been running the event to this day. They are all volunteers. The Flower Show costs the City little to nothing as the Club produces an advertising book, collects voluntary donations at the door and runs a commercial trade fair. The money is donated to the City.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND EVENTS IN OCEAN CITY

(Fri., May 25) UNLOCKING OF THE OCEAN! Mayor Jay Gillian will turn a key in the sand as various dignitaries, lifeguards and bathers look on. The purpose? To unlock the ocean for another season. This is a ritual that many shore resorts have repeated for decades. But this year something new will be added in Ocean City. Think about it. Who benefits the most when the ocean is unlocked? Hmmmm! Why the fish of course! Now they can swim here legitimately without fear of getting ticketed. It is a time of great rejoicing for our finny friends! They plan to show their appreciation by sending three fishy emissaries to thank the City. Bring your camera. The emissaries have promised to pose for photos. TIME: Noon, PLACE: Moorlyn Terrace Beach, opposite Music Pier.

MOTHERS DAY CONCERT HONORS MEMORY OF ESTHER WEIL

(May 13) MOTHERS DAY has always been a special time in this family community and resort.  Mothers are and always will be the core of the family, the person who brought us into this world and nurtured us through childhood.
No one felt more strongly about this than the late Esther Weil, the dynamic philanthropist who staged so many musical concerts in Ocean City often at her own expense. Esther was Ocean City’s Musical Mother who brought members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and great soloists like pianist Susan Starr to the Music Pier.

It was obvious that Joey wasn’t well cared for. So Agnes Cox, who worked with me at the time, and I would pay him to go on errands, bought him a winter coat, a new pair of shoes and tried to help as much as we could.
