Tickets on Sale for Gymnastics Expo on Sept. 16

What's Happening in Ocean City, NJ 8/29/17

Olympic gymnastics gold medalists Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson will be featured at a Gymnastics Expo on the Ocean City Music Pier on Sept. 16, 2017.

The Expo is open to all young gymnasts and will include a question-and-answer session, tips on skills and an array of vendors. Tickets ($35) are on sale now. There are two sessions from which to choose: 9 a.m. to noon or 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before each session. Tickets ($30) for an exclusive meet-and-greet (that includes a chance to take a photo with the stars and get an autograph) are also available. Liukin is the 2008 Olympic individual all-around champion, and she has nine World Championship medals. She was the 2016 Night in Venice grand marshal in Ocean City, a commentator during the 2016 Olympic Games and a 2015 contestant on "Dancing With the Stars."

Johnson was the 2008 Olympic balance beam gold medalist and team, all-around and floor exercise silver medalist. She is the author of the New York Times best-seller "Winning Balance: What I've Learned So Far About Love, Faith and Living Your Dreams." She also launched a successful business and has a career in broadcasting.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND IN OCEAN CITY

Another summer has passed all too quickly, and we're down to the final weekend of beach, boardwalk and downtown time before the end of the traditional season. Here are some events to help you make the most of it.

WACKY WEDNESDAY (Aug. 30):  Use your creativity to shape and sculpt french fries into your very own unique masterpiece. Contest is free. Open to all ages. Start time is 10:30 a.m. at the Music Pier.

DOOWOP WITH THE DUPREES AND THE OCEAN CITY POPS (Aug. 30): The Duprees are known the world over for their romantic interpretations of the most beautiful love songs ever written. "You Belong to Me" was the group's first million-seller and an instant hit. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. FAMILY NIGHT (Aug. 31): The final installment of the weekly Ocean City Boardwalk event includes live music and other entertainment every few blocks, along with special guests to go with the "Superheroes Unite" theme. The fun goes from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and is sponsored by Shriver's, Playland's Castaway Cove, Johnson's Popcorn and Gillian's Wonderland Pier.

OUR THREE TENORS WITH THE OCEAN CITY POPS (Sept. 3): Shawn Mathey, Cody Austin and Roy Hage will bring down the house with favorite arias and showpieces. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. OCNJ LABOR DAY RACE (Sept. 4): Five-mile beach run and one-mile fun run/walk. Great end of the summer season event. For more information, visit www.ocnj.us/race-events.   

SEPTEMBER FILLED WITH FUN

'GLASS ACT' AT THE ARTS CENTER (All of Sept.): A fused glass show by Ocean City resident Dana Sheppard will be featured at the Ocean City Arts Center September 1 through September 30.  A "Meet the Artist" reception, free and open to the public, will be held Friday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m.  The show will feature an array of glass pieces ranging from unique wall hangings to display art to functional platters and bowls.  The Arts Center is located within the Ocean City Community Center at 1735 Simpson Avenue. MUSIC OF THE KNIGHTS WITH THE OCEAN CITY POPS (Sept. 6):

A celebration of Britain's most legendary songwriters: Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. Tickets are $25/$20 and are available at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice, 609-399-6111 or any of the city's welcome centers (City Hall, Roy Gillian Welcome Center on the Route 52 causeway, Music Pier). 

CLASSIC CAR AND STREET ROD SHOW (Sept. 8-9): Cars will be displayed on the Ocean City Tabernacle grounds from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday before proceeding to 13th Street and Asbury Avenue for our first ever Sock Hop Block Party and Street Rod Display. The 1300 block will be closed to traffic and the party will include live entertainment and food specials from Johnny B. Goode Ice Cream Parlor and Boyar's Food Market. Cars are displayed there until 8 p.m. On Saturday, the cars will be at the Tabernacle grounds from 8 a.m. to noon and then will proceed to the boardwalk to be displayed between Sixth Street and 14th Street between noon and 4 p.m. Anybody interested in participating in the event can find more information and a registration form at www.ocnj.us/carshow.

FALL CONCERT SERIES AT THE LIBRARY (Sept. 8): The Ocean City Free Public Library's Fall Concert Series opens with The Fiddle Club under the direction of Dr. May Strange. The free concert starts at 7 p.m. in the Chris Maloney Lecture Hall.

JOHN CAFFERTY AND THE BEAVER BROWN BAND (Sept. 9): As part of the tribute to cars and nostalgia, Cafferty will perform on the Ocean City Music Pier at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. His band recorded the soundtrack to "Eddie and the Cruisers" in the 1980s and reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts with the single "On the Dark Side." The band has toured for more than three decades. CORVETTE SHOW (Sept. 10): The Corvette Forum recently listed Ocean City's among the Top 5 Corvette Shows in America. Models from throughout the history of Corvettes will be displayed on the boardwalk between Sixth Street and 14th Street from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  For more information andregistration, visit boardwalkcorvettes.com. BROADWAY SENSATION HUGH PANARO WITH THE OCEAN CITY POPS (Sept. 10): Philly's own Hugh Panaro joins the Pops in a program of Broadway showstoppers. "A DAY TO REMEMBER" 9/11 CEREMONY (Sept. 11): Ocean City's annual memorial ceremony begins at 7 p.m. in front of the Sixth Street Firehouse. All are invited to attend.

A NIGHT IN OLD VIENNA WITH THE OCEAN CITY POPS (Sept. 13): A September tradition includes Viennese favorites by the "Waltz-King," Johann Strauss, with singers and the musicians from the Ocean City Pops. Show begins at 7:30pm at the Ocean City Music Pier. Tickets are $20/$15 and are available at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice, 609-399-6111 or any of the city's welcome centers.

OC READS BOOK DISCUSSION (Sept. 13): Join a book discussion of the 2017 "Our Community Reads" selection, "One Amazing Thing" by Chitra Divakaruni. The event is 6:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Free Public Library. Visit www.oceancitylibrary.org for more information.

OCEAN CITY AIRPORT FESTIVAL (Sept. 16): Annual festival at the Municipal Airport at 26th Street and Bay Avenue features a ground display of unusual airplanes ranging from the World War II era to classics and warbirds. ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY HEALTH AND WELLNESS EXPO (Sept. 16): Participate in fitness instruction including yoga, receive health screenings and massages, listen to live music and learn from vendors how to get and stay healthy. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Music Pier loggia. WALK TO DEFEAT ALS (Sept. 16): This two-mile walk on the Ocean City Boardwalk raises funds to support patient services and research. BOARDWALK AEROBATIC AIR SHOW (Sept. 17): Thrill to some of the best stunt pilots and aerobatic champions in the world and watch military demonstrations. Free show begins at 1 p.m. and is best viewed from the beach and boardwalk between Sixth Street and 14th Street.

OCEAN CITY WITH THE POPS (Sept. 17): This performance will feature local musicians and singers from Ocean City and students from the local high school and intermediate school. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. Visit oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice or call 609-399-6111

MS CITY TO SHORE RIDE (Sept. 23): With 7,000 cyclists raising $5.6 million, this annual charity ride through southern New Jersey stops over in Ocean City. For more information, call 1-800-445-BIKE or visit www.mscycling.org.

OCNJ HALF MARATHON, 5K AND 10-MILE RUN/WALK (Sept. 24): The combined events draw thousands of runners to a spectacular course that includes ocean views and a tour of Ocean City. For more information, visit www.ocnj.us/race-events.

CHILI CHOWDER FESTIVAL (Oct. 1): The second annual Chili Chowder Festival returns to the Ocean City Music Pier noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 1. The event features an opportunity to sample the finest chili and chowder from Ocean City Restaurant Association members. This year's event includes a "Chili Cook Off" among the three platoons of the Ocean City Fire Department and proceeds benefit the O.C. Fire Fighters Foundation. Wristbands for the event ($15 adults and $5 for kids) are on sale at www.eventbrite.com, at all three Ocean City fire stations and on weekends at Johnny B. Goode Ice Cream Parlor (14th Street and Asbury Avenue).

WEEKLY EVENTS

Starting in July and running through the end of August, Ocean City's boardwalk and downtown will be host to a series of weekly events:

  • Beach Walks: South end location at 59th Street and Central Avenue (entrance to Corson's Inlet State Park) Tuesdays at 9 a.m., Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. North end location at OC/Longport Bridge parking lot Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m, Wednesdays at 9 a.m. Tickets may be purchased on-site.  Adults $1, children 50 cents.
  • Farmers & Crafters Market: Ocean City's popular weekly Farmers Market every Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Ocean City Tabernacle on the 500 block of Asbury Avenue. Crafters set up on the street adjacent to the Farmers Market.
  • Wacky Wednesdays: This year, the traditional "July Jubilee" and "Weird Week" contests will be held weekly on Wednesdays throughout the summer with a different theme each week.The contest is free and open to all ages. Start time is 10:30 a.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace. Sponsored by Shriver's Salt Water Taffy. 
  • Market Days: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays in downtown Asbury Avenue. Entertainment, face painters, balloon sculptors and more.
  • Family Nights: 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays on the boardwalk. Different bands and entertainers set up between Sixth Street and 14th Street. Sponsored by: Shriver's, Playland's Castaway Cove, Johnson's Popcorn, Gillian's Wonderland Pier.
  • Historic Tours:  2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays. Pick-up at 7th Street and Central Avenue.
