Doo Dah Parade goes off earlier in the day on April 8

What's Happening in Ocean City, NJ 3/8/17

Regis Philbin will be master of ceremonies for Ocean City’s fourth annual Mr. Mature America Pageant on April 8. Tickets go on sale starting at 9 a.m. Friday, March 10.

Tickets ($25 to $35) will be available at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice, by calling 609-399-6111, or in-person at the City Hall Welcome Center or the Roy Gillian Welcome Center on the Route 52 causeway.

The pageant is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday (April 8) on the Ocean City Music Pier. Mr. Mature, a tribute to men ages 55 and older, is the first and only event of its kind in the nation. It opens with a raucous production number, includes talent and poise competitions, and mixes humor with nostalgia. Philbin’s quick wit will be a perfect fit. In addition to hosting, the popular TV personality will conduct on-stage interviews with contestants.

More than 10, a record number in the pageant’s short history, will vie for the title. Celebrity judges will include Miss New Jersey Brenna Weick and QVC on-air host Bethanie Lori.

Mark Soifer, the founder of the pageant and of many other special events in Ocean City, will be honored with a “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Soifer retired at the end of 2016 at the age of 84, after a 45-year career as public relations director for the city.

The historic Flanders Hotel returns as a founding sponsor this year. The Flanders will cater meals for contestants and will offer special rates for attendees during the pageant weekend. Boardwalk merchant We Make It Personal will provide prizes.

Earlier in the day, Philbin will serve as grand marshal in the Doo Dah Parade, Ocean City’s season-opening celebration of all things humorous.

DOO DAH PARADE OPEN TO NEW ENTRIES

The 32nd annual Doo Dah Parade will start at noon Saturday, April 8, and feature marching bands, floats, a grand marshal and a brigade of more than 500 basset hounds. The traditional finale at the end of the parade route at the Ocean City Music Pier includes a “Pie-asco,” in which everybody is invited to smoosh their friends with shaving-cream pies.

The parade route starts at Sixth Street and travels downtown Asbury Avenue to 12th Street, then turns to the Boardwalk at 12th Street and finishes at the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk between Eighth and Ninth streets). The route this year will include special viewing areas (free) with emcees in the downtown at City Hall and on the boardwalk at the Music Pier.

Registration is open to any individuals or groups who would like to participate in the parade. Sign up online at ocnj.us/Doo-Dah-Parade. Basset hound owners can use the same form to register. Ocean City is proud to welcome back Dietz and Watson as a sponsor.
