Downtown Kick-starts July 4th With Patriotic Concert

The City’s DOWNTOWN will present a STAR SPANGLED SALUTE, noon, July 4th at the Mark Soifer Park, 9th and Asbury Ave., to kick off the resorts July 4th entertainment events. Talented performers from Michael Hartman’s Greater Ocean City Theatre Company will perform and energetic revue of patriotic songs. Enjoy the music in the park’s pleasant surroundings and be sure to shop and have lunch at one of the downtown’s popular restaurants.

The City’s Award Winning Shopping District features over 100 family-friendly stores that offer personal service second to none. Stroll the Avenue for an outstanding shopping experience.

The final event of the day will be a MUSICAL FIREWORKS Display fired from a barge at sea off the Boardwalk at 10 p.m. There will be two BIKE PARADES both starting at 10 a.m. The SOUTH OCEAN CITY PARADE begins at 40th and Central Ave. and goes south to the 52nd St. Playground. To participate register starting 9 a.m. at 40th and Asbury Ave. parking lot. The GARDENS CIVIC ASSN. PARADE travels through the Gardens with registration 9 a.m. at the Longport Bridge Parking Lot. Entry in both Parades is free.

 

The Annual July 4th KITE FESTIVAL competition: Registration is free starting at 6 p.m. with 7:30 p.m. Awards for Kite Categories and Age Divisions. There will be an 8 p.m. YO YO Demonstration and Contest and an 8:30 p.m. HULA HOOP Contest. All events are free and held between the Music Pier and 10th Street on the Beach. Sponsored by Air Circus.

NIGHT IN VENICE: It’s early this year. July 11th, one week after July 4th! The Boat Parade begins 6 p.m. by the Longport Bridge and ends at 23rd St.  Optional theme is “Dancing Under the Stars.” Both Boat and Home entries will compete for prizes. All boat owners will receive a complimentary photo of their boat in the Parade and a $50 decoration card.

The dancing theme will be represented in a commemorative mug given to all boat and home contestants. Grand Marshal will be John Stauffer, owner of Johnson’s Popcorn, celebrating its 75th anniversary in Ocean City.  The Action News Weather Team will also be featured in the Parade.

(July 2-3) Film Tribute to Legendary comedian-actor JERRY LEWIS at the Moorlyn Family Theatre, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, to mark the 50th Anniversary, of the Family Jewels, a movie Jerry both stars in and directs.

There will be a Red Carpet event on July 2nd to benefit the Ocean City Tabernacle’s Son Club, an after school program for children from Kindergarten to 8th Grade. Son Club provides homework help, life skill lessons and games. It is the only free after school program offered in Ocean City and provides a nurturing environment for children who would otherwise be home alone.

On July 2nd, the event features an appearance by Paulajane D’Amato, daughter of the late Skinny D’Amato, founder of Atlantic City’s 500 Club where Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin first teamed and subsequently rose to fame. Jim Monaco, owner of the largest collection of Martin and Lewis Memorabilia, will attend and display items.

(July 6) THE EMPERORS NEW CLOTHES, a delightful retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson Fairy Tale by the Greater Ocean City Theatre Co. will please children of all ages. It’s an energetic ensemble play with audience participation. The vain emperor is duped by two schemers who convince him they can make him a unique suit of clothes that is not only beautiful but magical and can only be seen by those who are honest. (July 6) GET THE LED OUT: America’s Led Zeppelin perform all the classic hits as they were originally made in the recording studio by the legendary rock band Led Zeppelin. This is part of the Monday Night Concert Series held at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $37. (July 9) The Ocean City Historical Museum’s Miniature Golf Day will be held at Playland’s Seaport Village Golf Course between 9th and 10th Streets on Boardwalk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Play a free round of golf and learn about “The Wreck of the Sindia.” Free tickets must be picked up at the Museum, 17th and Simpson Ave., reports Fred Miller, Ocean City Historian and author.
