107th Annual Baby Parade Set for August 11

What's Happening in Ocean City, NJ 7/27/16

This is the time of year when events kind of sneak up on you. Listen carefully. Do you hear the gurgle of babies and the clickety clack of elaborate displays being rolled down the boardwalk? That’s Ocean City’s 107th Annual Baby Parade and it’s two weeks away!

Ocean City is the only place in the nation that has presented a Baby Parade since 1909. The event is for children 10 years and younger, starts at 5 p.m. and goes from 6th to 14th streets on the Boardwalk. (Children entries only will exit at 12th Street.)

There are three Divisions: Div A: for children in fancy decorated Go-Carts, Strollers; Div B: Children in Comic decorated Go-Carts and strollers; Div C: Small Children’s Floats-measuring more than 3x5 ft. Celebrity Grand Marshal will be Kaitlin Becker, co-host of Sprout‘s “Sunny Side Up,” the only live morning show for pre-schoolers, broadcast from NBCUniversal’s 30 Rock Studios in New York City. Kaitlin is a former member of  Ocean City Theater Company having performed in “Anything Goes,”  “Little Shop of Horrors,”  “Hairspray”  and other productions.

 

(July 27) The Ocean City Pops presents REMEMBER WHEN ROCK WAS YOUNG -- The Elton John Tribute with special guest Craig A. Meyer. (July 27) OCBP WOMEN’S INVITATIONAL RACES: 34th St. Beach, 6:15 p.m. Women representing 15 Beach Patrols on the South Jersey Coast will be competing in this annual invitational race. For information, call (609) 399-6111.

(July 29 & 30) FOOTLOOSE: The Ocean City Theatre Co. High School Jr. Co. presents one of the most explosive musicals in recent memory to burst on the live stage with exhilarating results. Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people and guiding them with a warm heart and open mind. (Aug. 1) THE BACON BROTHERS in Concert: Show time 7:30 p.m. at the Music Pier. (Aug. 2) PINKALICIOUS, THE MUSICAL: Pinkalicious wants everything in her life to be pink.  After indulging in pink cupcakes, she wakes up pink. She is thrilled to be pink and have her dream come true. Her parents take her to a doctor and she is diagnosed with Pinkititis. On her way home, she is attacked by birds and bees when mistaken for a pink flower. After numerous hilarious pink adventures, she follows doctor’s orders and eats green food. She learns self-control and to be careful what you wish for. Her brother eats the last cupcake, turns pink and shouts with glee: Pink-A-Boo! 10:30 a.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. (Aug. 3) MISS CRUSTACEAN HERMIT CRAB BEAUTY PAGEANT: The original beauty pageant for Crustaceans. The winner receives the Coveted Cucumber Rind Cup and gets to walk down a flowery runway, 1 p.m. at the 6th St. Beach. Entry free. For information call (609) 399-6111.

(Aug. 3) The Ocean City Pops presents TUBBY THE TUBA! Children’s FREE one hour chamber music concert. The Pops Brass ensemble is featured in a rollicking version about Tubby-fun for all ages.  10:30 a.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier.

(Aug. 4) OCEAN CITY FISHING PIER OPEN HOUSE: 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Ocean City Fishing Club invites shutterbugs and other visitors to tour its Pier and Club House, 14th and Boardwalk. Visitors will be able to make a donation of canned goods to support the Ocean City Food Cupboard.

(Aug. 4-6) ART OF SURFING FESTIVAL: This interesting event features artists displaying and selling their work related to surfing in various mediums. Admission is free. There is live music at night. (Aug.5-7) 54th ANNUAL BOARDWALK ART SHOW: Leading artists from throughout the East Coast exhibit and sell their work between 8th and 13th Sts.  Traditionally a fine place to buy artwork at reasonable prices. (Aug. 6) ESA SURF CONTEST: 7TH Street Beach- sign- ups begin at 7 a.m. and the first heat in the water begins at 8 a.m. Sign up on the beach the morning of the contest. (Aug. 7) PUT ON A HAPPY FACE!  DICK VAN DYKE’S 90TH BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE by the Ocean City Pops.  This special staged concert will celebrate the prestigious career of beloved actor, singer and dancer, Dick Van Dyke. His career-changing Broadway turn in “Bye Bye Birdie” and his deadpan humor in “The Dick Van Dyke Show” to his unforgettable Bert in “Mary Poppins”  will be portrayed by Tony Nominee Gavin Lee along with Sean MacLaughlin and Sarah Pfisterer.  8 p.m. at the Music Pier, Tickets $25/20 at www.ocnj.us/boxoffice, 609-399-6111

(Aug. 8) SUSTAINABLE JERSEY GREEN FAIR: The Green Fair is a community-wide event meant to educate and encourage people of all ages to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. (Aug. 8) THE MACHINE IN CONCERT: Show time 7:30 p.m. at the Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and Boardwalk. As one of America’s oldest  Pink Floyd Tribute Bands, the Machine has spent more than 25 years honing their craft and it’s paid off. Spin Magazine confirms they sound “exactly like Pink Floyd.” Combining elaborate details, the band faithfully recreates Pink Floyd’s legendary live shows.
