OC Chamber Honors American Legion Post 524 and VFW Post 6650

Ocean City, NJ – On Tuesday, November 14th, the men and women of American Legion Morvay-Miley Post 524 and VFW Ferguson-Foglio Post 6650 were recognized as Citizens of the Year by the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce at their annual awards dinner held at The Flanders Hotel.

American Legion Post 524 is founded on Four Pillars: Membership, Youth Activities, Community Service and Service to Troops and Veterans. Each of these pillars encompasses a variety of programs that benefit fellow veterans, our service members and their families, the youth of Ocean City and its ordinary citizens.

They have been the recipient of many American Legion awards, including the prestigious Post Excellence Award given to local Posts who have demonstrated outstanding performance in exceeding the standards associated with support of the Four Pillars.

They have accomplished much since their inception as a Post in 2000. The projects and activities listed here are a portion of those accomplishments and the number of programs that they have underway clearly demonstrates their commitment as a Veterans/Community organization: Unit 524 Women’s Auxiliary-Squadron, 524 Sons of the American Legion, Veterans R&R, Coffee Express, Honor Flight, Run for the Fallen,  Walk for the Wounded, Scouting, Scholarships, Boys State, Girls State, Oratorical, Hiring our Heroes, and providing assistance to needy Veterans and Active Duty Personnel.

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars are combat veterans who have served our country. The Post was organized in 1946 by a group of returning Second World War veterans from the Ocean City area. Upon receiving its Post Charter that year from National Headquarters, the Ferguson-Foglio Post began what has been a long tenure as the hub of veteran gatherings and community activities in Ocean City. Post 6650 considers it their responsibility to help one another as combat brothers by supporting each other both socially and mentally. They are fortunate to have a great group of men and women who really care about each other and their families. It is also their duty to help all fellow veterans which they accomplish by supporting such organizations as Operation First Response, The Michael Strange Foundation, The New Jersey Run for the Fallen, The Buddy Baldwin Memorial Scholarship, and also to provide vacation time for veterans and their families as needed along with helping individual veterans throughout the year.

They also serve Ocean City by supporting such organizations as Boy Scouts of America, Ocean City Little League, The Sunshine Foundation, Ocean City Historical Society, Greater Ocean City Theatre Company, and they are members of Ocean City Chamber of Commerce.

“These citizens represent all that we stand for as Americans.  Their dedication and service to our great country and our town show that they have gone above and beyond the call of duty,” said Executive Director of Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce, Michele Gillian.

The Chamber was honored to recognize the members of these two valuable organizations that have given so much by serving our great country, maintaining our freedom, and serving our community. Both were presented with plaques from the Chamber, Pieces of the Walk and Proclamations from Mayor Jay Gillian, Certificates of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Frank LoBiondo, and Joint Legislative Commendations from Senator Jeff Van Drew and Assemblymen Sgt. Bob Andrzejczak and Bruce Land.
