First Day at the Beach Plus First Day in the Downtown set for Jan. 1 in Ocean City

January 1st, a quiet time in most communities, is a busy day for this family resort. The thousands of visitors who patronize the City’s First Night New Year’s Eve Celebration and stay over night in accommodations are looking for something to do.

First Day at the Beach and First Day in the Downtown fill the void for them and area residents.

A 5K Boardwalk Run/Walk begins 1:00 p.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Registration starts at 11 a.m. Entry fee is $20 with shirt while they last. Without shirt, fee is $10. Pre-registration fee is $18 if received before Dec. 28, 2012.

Ocean City High School Astronomical Observatory Added to Ocean City’s First Night Festivities

The Astronomical Observatory at Ocean City High School will join the list of Ocean City’s First Night activities. Astronomy teacher at the school, Dr. John Herrmann, along with Science Club members and community star gazers will offer telescope observations and photography of Jupiter and its moon, the astronomical wonders of the winter sky and the waning gibbous moon. The observatory will be open from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM, weather permitting.

Toy Donations Needed

OCNJ C.A.R.E. (Cleanup And Recovery Effort) is making an effort to bring Christmas to the children of Ocean City families affected by Hurricane Sandy and is asking for donations of new, unwrapped toys. Toys may be dropped off at the Civic Center, 6th & Boardwalk, Monday-Friday Noon to 6pm and Saturday 10am-4pm. Closed on Sunday. Please deliver toys by Friday, December 21st so that they may be prepared for the children.

First Night: Best Entertainment Value at the Shore!

First Night, Ocean City’s alcohol-free celebration of the New Year, will offer a selection of 60 shows from 4 p.m. till midnight. The volunteer Committee of the Chamber of Commerce that runs this program calls First Night the Best Entertainment Value at the Shore.

And they are right. Where else can you enjoy all this professional family entertainment capped by Fireworks at Midnight for just $15 per person. And, oh yes, an admission button also includes rides a Wonderland Pier from 5 p.m. till 9 p.m. plus miniature golf at Gillian’s Adventure Golf from 2 p.m. till 9 p.m.

First Night celebrates its 21st Anniversary this year. It began in 1991 when 1,000 people attended the event. Today the City hosts over 10,000 visitors with shows at ten central locations, many with multiple auditoriums.

Photos With Santa

Capture the magic of the 2012 holiday season by getting your photo taken with Santa on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Every Saturday and Sunday between November 24th and December 16th from Noon- 3pm, get a photo with Santa in an Ocean City lifeguard boat by the Music Pier at Moorlyn Terrace. A view of the beach and boardwalk in the background can make for a beautiful holiday family card. Each photo costs $10 and will be printed and mounted the day it is taken so you can take home the memories right away.

Ocean City Historical Museum Announces December Events

Ocean City Community Center Holiday Festival Partnering with the Ocean City Free Public Library, the Museum will be open on Sunday! Christmas craft for kids and other holiday treats! If you haven’t been to the Museum in awhile, today would be a great day to visit. Plus stop by the Library for all their activities.

Sindia Day @ the OC Historical Museum The Museum celebrates the anniversary of the Sindia’s wrecking off the coast of Ocean City, NJ. This year marks the 111th since that globe-circling ship came to rest on a sandbar near 17th Street. Most people who have visited Ocean City over those years know a little bit about the story, but today will be your chance to learn more. Was the ship battered in a storm? Or was there something else going on? Refreshments to be served. This will be a free event.

Call to Artists: OC Arts Center Hosts Juried Art Show in November

The annual Juried Art Show will be held at the Ocean City Arts Center throughout November.  Art will be   received for judging October 8 through October 26.  Prizes are: Best of Show, $200; Second Place, $100; Third Place, $100; and Four Honorable Mentions at $50 each.    Artists may submit up to 2 works which have been completed in the past 3 years.

The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Fifth Annual Business Summit, sponsored by Sturdy Savings Bank, on Wednesday, October 17th from 5pm-7pm at Ocean City Yacht Club in Ocean City, NJ.  The purpose of the summit is to provide information about the local and regional economy to the local businesses so that they may make informed planning and marketing decisions for next year.

2012 OC Halloween Parade

The Ocean City Exchange Club, in conjunction with the City of Ocean City, will be presenting the 65th annual Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 25th beginning at 7:15pm. This Ocean City tradition remains one of longest running Halloween parades in the tri-state area. The parade will march along Asbury Avenue from 6th to 11th Streets.

Trail of Two Cities Run/Walk - Nov. 3rd

The 17th Trail of Two Cities 5K Run/Walk between Ocean City and Somers Point will “break new ground” this year.

The event will be over the new, $400 million causeway recently completed between the two Cities. Participants will be able to get a good look at the Bay and a good look back at Ocean City as they negotiate the new super span on their way to Somers Point.

OCHM Announces Museum Movie Night

On October 12, 2012, the Ocean City Historical Museum will screen “Dial M for Murder” at the Ocean City Public Library’s Lecture Hall. Grace Kelly co-stars in this classic Alfred Hitchcock film which was originally release in 1954. Grace Kelly is considered by some to be Ocean City’s princess as well as Monaco’s. Join us as we enjoy one of her most mysterious films. Even if you aren’t a Grace Kelly fan, you’ll enjoy this film, which was ranked #9 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 10 greatest films in the genre of Mystery in June 2008.

Ginny Mulford, OCHS Teacher Signs Book at Sun Rose Words & Music

Retired longtime Ocean City High School teachers Ida Margolis and Ginny Mulford have collaborated on a children's book "Carrots for Charlie".  Ms. Mulford, the book's illustrator, will sign copies at Sun Rose Words and Music, located at 756 Asbury Avenue, on Wednesday, August 29, from 11 am to 1 pm.
